Mary Visits Elizabeth Luke 139 56

A Joyful Meeting: When Two Mothers and Two Miracles Collided

The story of Mary’s visit to Elizabeth is one of the most beautiful moments in Scripture—a meeting filled with divine recognition, prophetic joy, and the wonder of God’s perfect timing.

An Unlikely Pregnancy, An Extraordinary Child

Elizabeth was well past childbearing years when the angel Gabriel appeared to her husband Zechariah with stunning news: they would have a son. This child would be no ordinary baby—he would be “filled with the Holy Spirit, even from his mother’s womb” (Luke 1:15-16). He would be great in the sight of the Lord and prepare the way for the coming Messiah.

The Meeting That Changed Everything

Picture this scene: Elizabeth is in her final trimester, carrying the child who would become John the Baptist. Her young cousin Mary arrives for a visit, likely appearing no different than usual—after all, she would have been less than three months pregnant, barely showing any signs.

But something extraordinary happened the moment Mary spoke her greeting.

Recognition Before Birth

The unborn John leaped in Elizabeth’s womb—not a normal flutter of movement, but a leap of joy. In that instant, filled with the Holy Spirit, Elizabeth understood what was happening. She cried out in a loud voice: “Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! Why am I so favored, that the mother of my Lord should come to me?”

Think about this: Elizabeth would have known from the prophecies that somewhere, sometime, a woman would carry the promised Messiah. But imagine her overwhelming joy when she discovered that this woman—the one chosen to bear the Savior of the world—was her own beloved cousin Mary, standing right there in her home.

The First Witness

John the Baptist’s ministry began even before his birth. While still in his mother’s womb, filled with the Holy Spirit as promised, he recognized the presence of Jesus and responded with joy. He became the first witness to Christ, the first to proclaim His presence, even before either child had taken their first breath.

A Reminder for Us

This beautiful account reminds us that God’s plans are intricate and purposeful. He brought these two women—one elderly and one young, both carrying miracle babies—together at just the right moment. Their meeting was a confirmation of God’s faithfulness, a celebration of His promises fulfilled, and a glimpse of the salvation that was coming into the world.

Just as John leaped for joy at Jesus’s presence, may our hearts also leap with gladness at the reality of our Savior.
