You Will Prepare the Way of the Lord

He Spoke the Truth—And It Cost Him His Life

And so we come to the end of John’s story. It’s a sad one—heartbreaking, really. The man who prepared the way for Jesus, who boldly proclaimed truth in the wilderness, meets his end not on a battlefield, but at a birthday party.

A Righteous Stand

John was imprisoned because he spoke plainly to Herod: “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.” He didn’t back down. He didn’t soften the truth. He just said it. And that righteous stand became his demise.

Herod’s Respect, and His Fear

But here’s what struck me: even after locking him up, Herod still respected him. He listened. He admired him. He feared him—not because John was threatening, but because he was right. Herod knew John was a man of God. And that’s why, for a time, he kept him safe.

The Birthday That Changed Everything

Then came the birthday. A daughter danced. A promise was made. And in the end, Herod chose to protect his pride over his conscience. He gave in. He let a girl ask for what no one should have to ask for—John’s head on a platter. And he did it not because he wanted to, but because he couldn’t say no.

The Cost of Silence

It makes me wonder: how do we respond when we know what’s right, but we’re afraid to act? How do we live when we admire someone who speaks truth, yet we let fear keep us silent?

John gave his life for the truth. Herod gave his power to the moment. And in the end, we’re left with a question: What would we have done?

Not what we say we’d do. But what we’d actually do—when the moment comes, and the cost is real.
